We welcomed Anthony McCarty on 2-5-12 to the BVCC family! He grew up in Owasso, OK and attended church at Northside Christian in Broken Arrow. He graduated from Ozark Christian College in December 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Church Planting. He is now living in Bentonville, a roommate of David Conrad.

Starting a new church, or even a non-profit organization, is something that Anthony envisions for his life and hopes that God will open doors for him in this ministry.

He has a passion to serve in church with small groups and missions, and has already connected with Ron’s group on Wednesday night. Anthony also assisted David and the team cooking the first “Forge” Dinner for our Men’s Ministry.

In his free time, Anthony likes to attend church, paintball, read, and play video play .

LEGACY CELEBRATION

January 29 was a great night to celebrate BVCC's story. The evening touched on the church's 39 year history, including Building God's Legacy and looking to the future with One and Done beginning April 1, 2012. The children ended the program on a high note as they skipped in to the favorite song "Big House."

Recommitment of FAITH
Patty Boone expressed her recommitment to the Lord on January 29 as she was baptized by Pastor Ron. Patty, who has been a part of the BVCC family since February 17, 1980, was immersed as a child, but was ready for a new start in 2012 and building an even closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Pray for Patty on her decision.

Patty lives at Legacy Village and works for Pathfinders, where she helps young people with their handwriting and money management. She also assists in their country store. Patty continues to do her teddy bear ministry whenever she can, taking them to sick people in the church and at her residence.

HAITIAN CHRISTIAN MISSION UPDATE

The Missions Ministry received this 2011 update from Etienne (Steven) Prophete at Haitian Christian Mission and asked to share the good works with the church family. Continue to pray for their Kingdom work and that through their mission many people will find the Lord in the coming year.

We were excited to have Dan and Carol Ritchie come forward and share their desire to become part of the Bella Vista Christian family on Sunday, January 22.

Dan and Carol moved to Bella Vista last summer from Aurora, CO. Dan worked for the Department of Defense for 35+ years, so the family relocated quite a few times through their lives, including some years in Korea and Okinawa, Japan.

Carol worked outside the home early in their married life, but enjoyed caring for her family as they made new homes over the years. They have three sons. Two remain in Colorado and one resides in New Orleans. They also have three grandchildren.

The Ritchie’s joined the Bella Vista Christian family on Jan. 22, 2012 after finding a place that loves young families and is growing. Dan has always been involved in the jail ministry and was drawn to BVCC’s service in this area. He is also very musical and has joined the Fusion singers and will play his guitar at The Forge men's dinner. Carol wants to become more involved in the Women’s Ministry at BVCC. They both enjoy learning history, traveling, going to the gym, and reading.

Dan and Carol have a passion to serve others. He volunteers weekly with the Genesis House in Siloam Springs, while Carol serves the young women at Saving Grace in Rogers regularly.

Happy 95th Birthday, Winston!!

Monday, January 9 Winston Carter celebrated his 95^th birthday with his wife Jackie and son, Ron, during lunch at Highlands Health Care. Everyone in the dining hall sang Happy Birthday to him and then enjoyed a piece of his birthday cake.

The newspaper article below was printed in the Weekly Vista recently:

Longtime Bella Vista resident Winston Carter marked his 95^th birthday on Jan. 9. Carter celebrated the occasion with wife Jackie and son Ron during lunch at Highlands Health Care. Everyone in the dining hall sang “Happy Birthday,” then was treated to a piece of cake.

Carter has been a resident of Bella Vista since the late 1960s. He and his first wife, Margaret, enjoyed experiencing the early days of growth here in the village.

He was a charter member of Bella Vista Christian Church, having served as elder, deacon, treasurer and chairman of the board. His son, Ron, is currently the pastor at the church.

Carter also was an active member of Gideons, the Lions Club, the Bella Vista Street Committee, the Village Pride Committee and Bella Vista Crime Watch. He served as director and charter member of Bella Vista Meals on Wheels, and is a past director of Helping Hands and past director-president of the Bella Vista Townhouse Association. He was awarded the Village Pride Award in 1999.

He and Margaret were also partners in The Village Mart, a convenience store that served Bella Vista in the early days, before the coming of the large supermarkets.

After Margaret died, Carter married another longtime Bella Vista resident, Jackie Hubbard. Until recent years, they both stayed active in the village, especially at Bella Vista Christian Church.

The Dickens Carolers greeted our guests and church family in song as they arrived at the Christmas Eve and Chrismas morning services. This year BVCC held three services Christmas weekend at 5:00 pm and 11:00 on December 24 & 10:30 am on Dec. 25.

A good-sized crowd attended this annual meal on Christmas Day. We always appreciate our Fellowship Ministry sharing their Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays with others from the church family and community. Below are a couple thank you notes from some that attended outside the church:

Thanks to everyone responsible for putting together the Christmas Day Potluck Dinner. This was our fifth or sixth time to attend and we have always enjoyed it so much! Having the youth assisting was a nice touch. They added an energy and playfulness to the event. Especially enjoyed the smaller children sitting on the floor watching the sing-along and then being brought to the front to help sing Away in the Manger.

Book Review by Linda White, BVCC Pastoral Assistant

Pastor Ron asked me to read a sample book that the church received in the mail entitled “I Quit!”. The book is written by a pastor’s wife, Geri Scazzero, whose husband Peter Scazzero, is the founder and has been the Senior Pastor at New Life Fellowship Church in Elmhurst, New York for over two decades.

After years of pretending that everything was alright in her life, and trying to please everyone in her family and the church, Geri Scazzero decided it was time to make some changes. The most drastic was telling her husband she “was quitting the church”. Geri confesses quitting was the hardest thing and seemed like the end, but it was really only the beginning of getting her self-being and spiritual life back on track.

Through the book Geri admits this wasn’t an easy choice, but the only hope for her to become who she was meant to be in Christ. She initiated a few steps that she credits for the spiritual transformation that God has made in her life today.

1. QUIT BEING AFRAID OF WHAT OTHERS THINK - If we don’t break through our need for the approval of others, our growth is seriously stunted. We cannot mature into spiritual adulthood and a wall is erected that stands between us and the beautiful future God has for us. We settle for the comfort of being “okay” with others, based on others being “okay” with us.

2. QUIT LYING – Lying and pretense is so deeply ingrained in our society today that we rarely notice it. You lie when you take on responsibilities you don’t want to do, lie to be polite, lie out of anger, lie out of fear, and lie to not disappoint people.

3. QUIT DYING TO THE WRONG THINGS – Geri believed that she always had to put others’ needs before her own and that she needed to die to herself to accomplish this. She sees many Christians who live unhappy, unfulfilled lives. They can be tired, frustrated and often resentful, then slowly burn out. She sees that God never intended us to die to the parts of ourselves that bring life to our souls.

4. QUIT DENYING ANGER, SADNESS AND FEAR - In Geri’s book she encourages the reader to “feel their feelings…identify the reasons for feeling the way you do”. When we quit denying sadness, anger and fear we will lead a more spiritually and physically healthy life. Owning your feelings will also prevent you from projecting your emotions in a negative way to someone else.

5. QUIT BLAMING – Blaming others comforts us, at least for a while, with the illusion that we are in control. We all have choices in life and no one is responsible for you and your life but you. We can’t change others, but we can change ourselves, and we must be able to say “no” to say a healthy “yes”. Geri says when we quit blaming and utilize our God-given personal freedom, our sense of helplessness evaporates.

6. QUIT OVER FUNCTIONING – Geri says “we over function when we do for others what they can and should do for themselves.” Over functioning dangerously affects friendships, marriages, churches, workplaces and families. Over functioning builds resentment, prevents us from focusing on our own life, erodes our spiritual life and destroys community. God invites us to take responsibility for our own lives and not be over responsible for others.

7. QUIT FAULTY THINKING - Faulty thinking is when we believe something to be true that is false. As Mark Twain once said “It isn’t what you don’t know that hurts you; it is what you know that isn’t so” . Faulty thinking is a deadly threat to emotional and spiritual health. There are three types of faulty thinking Geri describes: 1. All or nothing (when we exaggerate, make things much bigger than they are.) 2. Taking things personally (when we take offense at, take responsibility or blame for something before we have all the facts.) 3. Thinking things will never change (When you think this way you remain rooted in the past, but to assume a situation can change leads to new energy in your life. )

8. Quit Living Someone Else’s Life - When you are living out someone else’s dream it can feel like you’re on an out of control bus, and God calls us to get off the bus that other people are driving. 1. Discover yourself (remember you are God’s handiwork); 2. Discover your integrity (recognize and define what is important to you); 3. Listen to your inner rhythm (What makes you thrive in a healthy balanced way? Remember, what is optimal for you will not be optimal for those around you.); 4. Set your boundaries (Who do we set boundaries with? The answer is simple… with everyone! By doing this we are setting ourselves free to live our life and setting those around us free as well. 5. Let go of others (Quit trying to run other people’s lives. It takes energy and time to run interference and control others. It also takes the focus off your own life.)

Geri’s prayer is that we take hold of God’s courage to live divided no more, refusing to smile on the outside, while being sad on the inside. She adds, “It is never too late to start quitting.”

Dear Staff and Church Family,

Thank you so much for the generous gift card for dinner at Appleby's in recognition of our 50th Wedding Anniversary. This was so unexpected, but so appreciated.

Yes, 50 years is quite a milestone. We did have a beautiful celebration with family and friends. My observation is that it is a miracle. Ron's comment is that it is a lifetime. We both agree that without the Lord in our lives and in our marriage it would not have been possible.

Although we are neither one perfect, and there have been rough times, we love each other dearly. We pray that our marriage will be a testimony for Christian marriage and for the relatioship of Christ to the church.

Holiday Food Drive Concludes

The Benevolence Ministry thanks everyone who brought food during the holiday season for the Oasis Food Pantry at the EV Free Church in Bella Vista. Joan Humphrey and the team took trunkloads of food over the past few weeks. Remember...even though we are not collecting at BVCC, feel free to drop sacks of groceries anytime at the EV Free Church. Their pantry is open every Wed. from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.

We have been blessed the past few weeks to have new people make their decisions for Christ at BVCC.

Pictured below is the Hundley family. Dad, Charles, was baptized on Dec. 18 while his family watched and shared his joy.

The Hundley Family was invited to BVCC by Amy’s co-worker, Kent McFarland, at the 2010 Block Party. They joined the church on Come On In Sunday (Nov. 20) and Charles was baptized on Dec. 18.

Charles & Amy were both born in Rogers, AR and are blessed to have a lot of family in this area. Charles is employed as an IT Manager with Ozark Natural Food, an Organic Grocery Store in Fayetteville. Amy works at Premiere Retail Network as a Senior Field Operations Manager. Prior to that she was with Wal-Mart for ten years.

Charles II is 12 and attends Washington Jr. High. He likes to hike, camp and the outdoors. Eleven year olds, Amaya and Reagan, both attend Ruth Hale Barker Middle School. Amaya likes talking on the phone with friends, canoeing and enjoys being outside. Reagan loves animals and hopes to be a vet someday. Both girls enjoy going shopping. Aden, 8, is a student at Thomas Jefferson and loves anything sports related...especially football. Four year old Mallory also likes to shop and watch movies. She attends preschool at the Helen Walton Enrichment Center.

Family time is very important, but in their spare time Charles and Amy like to canoe, go to the movies, and eat out. They both are very musical. Amy has already shared her violin talent at our Blended Service and Charles plays the guitar at home. All of the children are beginning to play instruments, too. Charles is also interested in drama.

Bob and Joy Walker transfered their membership to the BVCC family on Dec. 11.

The Walkers are enjoying the beauty of Bella Vista, moving here in August from Tulsa. They have lived in many states during their marriage, as Bob is retired from the government in upper management with the FAA and as an air traffic controller.

Joy was blessed to work in the home helping raise their five children: a son and daughter, who now reside in Washington D.C.; a daughter in Alaska; a son in Tulsa; and their daughter and family in Bentonville. They also have five grandchildren. Joy has volunteered many hours at the Cancer Treatment Center of America and at the Green Country Hospice, both located in Tulsa. She is currently a volunteer with the Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale and Benton County.

Bob and Joy were members of the Cedar Ridge Christian Church in Tulsa before placing their membership at BVCC on Dec. 11, 2011. They are both “pleasure pilots” and have enjoyed flying planes and helicopters in the past. They also like to play golf, fish and travel. While living in Alaska, cross country skiing was another favorite sport of the Walkers.

Little Sprouts Christmas Open House & Program

The Mighty and Mini Sprouts got everyone in a festive mood as they sang nativity songs, played handbells, carried their battery-lighted candles, and became Santa's elves at the end of the program. The wooden toy cars & hammers the children used during the program were made by the BV Presbyterian Church Toymakers. Thank you so much! After they have been painted, the Mighty and Mini Sprouts will wrap and give the cars as New Year's presents to the children at the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter.

Legacy Letter from Elders

Below is the letter that the BVCC Elders mailed to the congregation on May 18, 2008 regarding the proposed building renovation and expansion project. Pastor Ron referred to this on Sun. Dec. 4, 2011 while giving an update on the Legacy building project.

The Church Board voted last Monday night to call a Special Congregational Meeting on July 13, 2008 to approve or disapprove a building program for our congregation.

One question that always comes up is: Why do we need to enlarge and improve our current facility? Some of the reasons are as follows:

1. We have some significant space constraints. We are running out of space for both children and adult programs. (Look downstairs on Sunday Mornings and throughout the building on Wednesday Nights.)

2. Opportunities for growth are all around us. The population of Bella Vista has grown significantly in the last few years and will probably continue to grow. There are a lot of people in Bella Vista that need to make Christ as significant part of their life.

3. We have some safety concerns. We need overhead fire sprinklers through out the building and additional fire exits.

A second question is: Why now, the national economy is not very strong?

Additional space is needed now! God through the ages has told a number of people (and groups of people) to do all kinds of things. I can’t remember any time when God said, “Wait until you feel comfortable before you start.” We need to remember that this is God’s Church and He will provide the funds needed to advance His Kingdom.

A third question is: What has changed since we voted last year”

1. We will build from the same plans that we presented last year, but we have lowered our anticipated cost from around $2,900,000 to around $1,900,000.

2. We will not make any significant changes in the sanctuary, i.e. the pews stay.

3. We will decrease the added space slightly but we will still add approximately 6,500 square feet of space.

4. We do not anticipate moving out of the building during construction.

5. The Narthex (Foyer) will be made much more attractive and useful but it will not be changed as much as planned last year.

6. We will add overhead fire sprinklers to all parts of the building. We will also add some additional fire exits.

7. etc.

A fourth question is: When do we plan to start construction?

We anticipate starting construction after our

Christmas inspires projects by Two-Hawks

Grammy Award-nominated American Indian flute player John Two-Hawks gathered several Arkansas musicians to his studio near Eureka Springs to record Heaven and Nature Sing to benefit the Benton County School of the Arts Youth Choir.

Bonnerdale musician and vineyard operator Tomas J. Cantrell worked with a computer software program featuring an orchestra from Austria to create Sounds of the Season, Volume 1, a traditional instrumental Christmas recording.

Two-Hawks, whose heritage is Lakota Sioux, says he hopes that his music “will travel the world and, hopefully, somewhere, some way it can speak to someone’s heart and we can learn to live in harmony with each other and all creatures on the planet.” For Cantrell, it’s about “old connections.”

“Wine and vines are my connections to the past, it’s an activity that makes you feel connected to the earth and everything around you. You learn that the cycle of the seasons is your master and that music is the higher end of the human spirit.”

Two-Hawks, who moved to the Eureka Springs area 11 years ago, has recorded 21 albums, including 2010’s Windsongs, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for best Native American album. His wife, Peggy, handles the business side of his career.

“I had always intended to record a second Christmas album, there’s so much wonderful music,” Two-Hawks says. “This time, I wanted to work with some of the amazing talent in this area and have it benefit the Benton County School of the Arts Youth Choir to help them purchase risers and uniforms.”

Along with the choir, Two-Hawks brought in pianist Amy Talbert, violinist Emily Bartell and hammered dulcimer player Jim Fyhrie. “Amy is an improvisational piano master,” Two-Hawks says. “She does on piano what I do with the flute. All her parts on the album are first takes.”

He is especially pleased with how “The First Noel” turned out. “I wanted to move the song from a minor key arrangement into this place of reflection,” he says. “She nailed the concept.”

Perhaps the album’s biggest surprise is that Two-Hawks’ flute isn’t the focal point. “I did not want this to be a Native American flute album, I wanted it to be a Christmas album. I play a lot of instruments. I love the flute; it’s very soulful. But on this album, I wanted to use it as a sort of secret weapon. When it comes in, it’s exciting to hear it.”

Two-Hawks also sings on several of the 12 tunes, all of which were recorded this past summer. “I’m really proud of ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.’ It was wonderful to sing on that. My voice was my first instrument and I had a lot of encouragement from my parents, who were also musical.”

To get into the Christmas spirit while recording, Two-Hawks says he “brought a pine-scented candle into the studio, lit it and tricked myself into thinking it wasn’t 100 degrees outside, that it was Christmas.” No such trickery will be needed Saturday to get into the Christmas spirit. He and several musicians from the Christmas recording will perform in concert at The Auditorium in Eureka Springs. “We’re going to pull out all the stops,” he says. “When people come into the auditorium, I’m hoping they’ll feel like they’ve just stepped through my front door.”

Two-Hawks has been playing flute for more than two decades and is one of the instrument’s best and best known players. The flute’s power continues to enthrall him. “For me, the flute calls to something deep in the soul; it comes from a place that’s pure and ancient. It seems to call something inside all of us that wants to reconnect with the purity and truth in those ancient places. All of us can find ourselves surrounded by what’s not real. The flute, without speaking a word, takes us back to that place where we know what’s real and what’s not.”

Cantrell took a rather circuitous route to rural Hot Spring County. He was born in France, where his father, who played sousaphone in the U.S. Army Band, was stationed. He studied music composition at the University of Texas, was a government affairs officer for a cable TV firm and played bass in a country show band. Cantrell also has roots in Arkansas.

“My great-grandfather was from Ozan in Hempstead County. When my dad retired, he and his brother bought 80 acres in Bonnerdale in 1970.” After the deaths of his parents, Cantrell leased the farm out for a few years. He and his wife, Karen, started spending more time in Bonnerdale in 2001 and made the move permanent several months ago.

The land is planted with some 500 cynthiana grape vines. Cantrell sells cuttings from the native Arkansas vines on his website. “I hope we’ll have a commercial winery some day, I’ve got my eye on a property in Garland County,” he says. Hot Spring County is dry.

His desire to make a Christmas album was motivated by not hearing music on the radio that he liked.
“It’s light pop, easy listening music,” he says of his album. “It’s got pop tunes, traditional folk tunes and some classical overtones.” Some music sites have compared it to Mantovani or Ferrante and Teicher.

Like Two-Hawks, Cantrell recorded his album in the summer at his home, which was also being remodeled. “It hit 112 degrees the day I was working on ‘Jingle Bells,’” he says, laughing. The album is all instrumental by design. “I thought people might sing along with the music, that it might engage them in the spirit of the holiday and with their family.” The album is available only at online music sites.

But where did he get the name for his music label, vineyard and website - Waving Fish. “A few years ago our pond was really low and I saw this enormous fish swimming, about half of his body was out of the water. It rolled over on the side and the dorsal fin waved at me.”

Paul & Linda Mega introduce Bill & Julie Flock (right)

Bill was living in Bella Vista when he and Julie married in 2006. He moved here from Dallas a few years earlier and she was previously living in Tulsa. Bill is retired from his business, Auto HR, a nationwide human resource consulting company. Earlier in his career he was executive Vice President of Administration with Steak & Ale/Finnegan's and was a Senior Vice President at Long John Silvers. Julie worked for 15 years with Physicians Total Care in their customer service in the shipping Department. Julie is currently employed part time as our Little Sprouts Learning Center assistant teacher. Between them they have five children and seven grandchildren living throughout the U.S.

Bill is very gifted in woodworking and works on that in his spare time, while Julie loves to cross-stitch, golf and go walking. They both enjoy reading.

They became better acquainted with BVCC while Julie was hospitalized last spring. “It meant a lot to Bill and I to have Pastor Ron and Dave visit.” said Julie.

David & Teresa Hutchins are welcomed by David Conrad

The Hutchins have been in NWA for seven years, with David moving from Oklahoma City and Teresa from Farmington. (She grew up in California and a few other cities.) David is presently employed at Superior Industries in the Melt Furnace Department. Teresa works for Acosta Sales & Marketing, a Bentonville company that represents vendors in Wal-Mart Stores. Between them they have two sons and two daughters residing in Las Vegas, Springdale, AR & Springfield, MO. The Hutchins enjoy bowling, listening to Karaoke, antique cars, and going to garage sales and auctions. They had visited BVCC in the past, but felt drawn back a few months ago. They were excited to walk in and see familiar faces...Mavis Downing has been on bowling teams with them in the past, and Andy and Wanda Derizotis are friends from Karaoke.

David and Teresa have the gift of compassion for people. They take on home remodeling projects for family and friends that are in need. The Hutchins also enjoy visiting people in the hospital, and assisting in the homes of their aging friends and family, so they will be able to remain independent.

Dave Cooper introduces Jim & Sher Barnes

The Barns shared the same hometown...Granell, Iowa, but moved to Bella Vista in August from Cedar Rapids, IA to be closer to their two sons, who reside in Russellville, AR and Oronogo, MO. Jim is a retired corporate tax analyst, but keeps very busy as a basketball referee. He currently is in the midst of the BB season in NWA for High School & Middle School teams, and tournaments. Sher is employed as a mental health Paraprofessional with Ozark Guidance working with youth. She volunteered for about 13 years with at-risk youth through the juvenile court system and detention centers, but decided about 10 years ago to get her college degree in this field.

They both enjoy working out and playing pickle ball at the Wellness Center in Rogers. Jim also takes advantage of the golf courses in Bella Vista. Sher is a very gifted vocalist and has helped lead worship services for many years. She has already connected with our Ignite Praise and Worship Team and serves regularly.

They found familiar faces in the BVCC church family the first week they visited. John & Sue Beaty attended Eastview Christian Church in Cedar Rapids with the Barns, and Linda Mega’s sister and Sher were close friends during their school years. What a small world!

Sher also has a heart for missions and participated in a mission trip to Africa last year. She remembers as a little girl, her mother opening the family home to visiting missionaries from their church.

Even though both grew up in Kansas, they lived quite a few years in Butler MO, owning Berrycold Ice, a dry ice distributor to grocery stores and medical labs. They moved to NWA to branch out their business in June of 2011. Bella Vista has been a “visiting family and vacation destination” for the Berry’s for almost 15 years.

They have three daughters residing with their families in Japan, Oklahoma and Wichita. They also have two granddaughters in Japan. Pam has not only helped with the family business for the last 10 years, but has been a contract trainer for computer application for 30+ years. (She works with training companies, that in turn, train businesses on the computer.)

The Berrys attended the Adrian Christian Church and over the years Pam has volunteered with children and taught VBS. Malcolm & Pam have also served as youth group sponsors. At this time of their lives they feel the Lord might be able to use them in a more social outreach and would enjoy serving in ministries where they can meet people.

Born and raised in Rogers, Jeremiah and Christy knew each other in Junior High and became high school sweethearts before they married. They feel blessed that almost all of their family resides in NWA.

Jeremiah graduated from nursing school last summer and is now working as a nurse and coordinator at Concordia Care Center’s special Alzheimer’s Unit. Christy has been employed with First National Bank in Rogers for 9 years. They have two children. Four year old Jonah and Hannah, 2, attend Mary’s Little Lamb Preschool, where they love to read and sing. Motorcycle riding has been a fun adventure for Jeremiah and Christy, even though she does not ride much these days. The Cotton family enjoys traveling, going to the beach, and last year went RV camping for the first time.

Church has been an important part of their lives growing up. Christy was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church and served as a Junior Elder, sang in the choir, and helped with youth. Jeremiah attended the Assembly of God in Rogers and as a boy loved the Royal Rangers, a Christian based Boy Scout troop.

Both have spiritual gifts they hope to use for the Lord in the days ahead. With Jeremiah’s caring and compassionate job, he is able to hear the residents’ stories and visit with their families. Christy hopes to use her gift of hospitality... possibly cooking and baking for others.

Another couple that started out as High School sweethearts, the Herrings, both grew up in Cleveland, OK. Jeremiah is attending Ozark Christian College and looks forward to graduation in December 2012.

After becoming acquainted with David Conrad at OCC, Jeremiah is currently BVCC’s volunteer Student Ministry Intern assisting as a Jr. High boys sponsor on Sundays, Wednesdays, and other activities. Rachel will graduate from online college this month and receive her Associate Degree with a major in Business Administration. She hopes to seek employment in the corporate world. Rachel also attended OCC and is currently a sponsor with our High School girls. Jeremiah enjoys going to concerts, while Rachel is into arts & crafts and mosaic projects.

The Herrings have serving hearts for the Lord and a passion for Jr. and Sr. High students. They have also taught children in VBS. Rachel has a lot experience with children, as she was a nanny for quite a few years and still loves to babysit.

Rob is new to Bella Vista, moving here from Broken Arrow, OK following his marriage to Jennifer in August 2011. (She has been part of the BVCC staff ministry team for almost 6 years.) He is currently working with Wal-Mart in the Electronics Replenishment Department. Rob has a daughter: seven-year-old Lauren, and Jennifer’s has three children: Brett - 14, Leah - 10, and Blake - 7.

The family loves spending time together and Rob and Brett are enjoying archery hunting and fishing this fall. He is already serving with the BVCC Security Team and helps with special events and projects in the Children’s Ministry.

The Maline Family relocated to NWA from Oklahoma City in July. (Mike is originally from Colorado and Jenny from Kansas.) After he completed his residency as an Orthopedic Surgeon, a job opportunity became available at the Agility Center in Bentonville. Jenny enjoys being a stay- home mom these days with the family, but previously she worked as a copy writer at an advertising agency.

They have a son and daughter. Ethan, 6, is a student at Ambassadors for Christ Academy in Bentonville. He likes crafts and wrestling with his dad. Three-year-old Layla attends Little Sprouts Learning Center at BVCC and likes to dance, color and play “princess”. Both children love going to grandpa’s farm in Kansas to help with the fall wheat harvest.

The Maline’s cherish their family time together, especially outdoor activities… hikes and bike rides. Mike likes football and cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Jenny likes to dabble in photography and taking pictures for the extended family.

Dave Cooper introduces Thomas Barlow

Tom relocated to NWA in July 2010 from Hondo, TX, where he still has a home. He became familiar with Bella Vista while visiting a friend a couple years back and thought it was “beautiful” here. Tom retired as Senior Vice President with International Telephone and Telegraph, where he was employed for 30 years.

He has two children, both whom remain in Texas, along with his three grandchildren. He enjoys boating, fishing, playing golf, and is looking forward to attending programs at the Walton Center in the days ahead. He also has a heart for rescue dogs and cares for two of them at his home.

Jessica VanderMolen shares with John & Sue Beaty that she, husband Mark, and children: Kaerina, Veronica and Andrew and Luke want to join the BVCC family.

In 1996 Mark and Jessica VanderMolen met in Rogers and moved to Fort Smith where Mark was in the car business and Jessica was stay-at-home mom. After the car business sold in 2006, the family moved to Bella Vista and worked together in the motorcycle business until it recently sold. They have four children who are very active at BVCC: Andrew - 17, Kaerena - 16, Veronica - 13, and Luke-6.

Jessica serves in the KidTown Children’s Ministry once a month, cooks for the Wednesday evening students, and helps in the church library. The family enjoys sports, especially watching Luke play football during the fall season.

The Kelly & Shelli Kerr Family is welcomed by Jerry Lamb.

The Kerr family became acquainted with BVCC through Shelli’s parents, Mike and Dee Barr, and the Kerrs were married by Pastor Ron in 2010. Kelly grew up in Oklahoma and is an attorney with the private practice firm Kerr & Kerr in Jay, Oklahoma. Shelli moved to NWA in 2000 and is now is employed with the City of Bentonville as a Planning Services Manager

Shelli has two sons. Eleven-year-old Hagen attends R.E. Baker and loves football and sketching. Austin, 6, goes to school at Thomas Jefferson in Bentonville and likes music, playing piano, Legos, and reading. Kelly is a tennis pro and former tennis coach, so the entire family looks forward to family time on the courts. Shelli also likes to knit and read in her downtime.

They have enjoyed attending BVCC, especially worshipping together as a family. Kelly has a desire to be in ministry... possibly leading a Life Group or helping with the teens in the future.

Our 9th -12th Graders joined hundreds of other teens from around the area for this annual fall conference at Ozark Christian College in Joplin. The weekend was filled with praise and worship sessions, classes to challenge and grow spiritually, plus hands-on activities to support Christian missions. The meal at the restaurant of the "giant burrito" was pretty great, too!

They live in Joplin and as they were passing through Bella Vista dropped off religious Christmas cards from A.R.M.(American Rehabilitation Ministry) that our BVCC jail ministry team will take to the inmates at the Benton County Jail.

I wanted to write to you to say thank you so very much for supporting me in my journey to Cambodia to visit the RAPHA HOUSE girls, staff, and facilities. I am glad that I went for the 2 week eye-opening and heartbreaking experience. I thought of you and how you made it possible for me to go, see, and serve every day. I needed your support to make this step of obedience.

This ministry of RAPHA HOSUE (www.raphahouse.org) is one that everyone must know about! I am thankful to be someone that can now help give a voice to these broken and abused girls. Without a ministry like RAPHA HOUSE, they would be living lives of hopelessness and despair as the children that have yet to be rescued still are. Please pray for an end to this modern day form of slavery that is happening worldwide.

· Give $150 towards one of the rescued girls medical needs. Her eyes were damaged while in slavery, and she needs surgery. She loves to sing and has the most beautiful voice.

· Give to the Kid’s Club prevention program which provides needs for the street kids in a slum area of the capital city Phnom Penh.

· Give to the CHURCH at RAPHA HOUSE in Battambang that is open to the community there.

· Purchase things that the RAPHA girls made such as purses and jewelry. Each girl gets paid some money for each item that she makes and sales which teaches her empowerment, confidence, and opens the door to learn money management. The rest goes to support the SAFE HOUSE.

· I am most thankful for the opportunity I was given to go. I needed to be there. I am honored to be a voice for these girls. I will forever be amazed by seeing RAPHA HOUSE in action as they fight for these girls every step of the way. The girls have lived a nightmare and deserve a chance to know the one true healer , redeemer, and friend. They need to know there is hope in this dark world. I hope that you all will feel compelled to research and support this cause in any way that you can. Let me know if you need more information about anything!!! For me, meeting these girls solidifies how worth it they all are.

The article below appeared in a recent edition of The Weekly Vista. Jack and his wife, Bettye, attended Bella Vista Christian for 10+ years and he was the drummer for BVCC's worship service and the Celebration Choir during that time.

BIG BAND LEADER, JACK MITCHELL DIES.

Bella Vista, and the music world in general, lost a friend last week with the passing of big band leader Jack Mitchell. Mitchell, 88, died Oct. 20 in Cleveland, TN.

As a young boy, Mitchell taught himself to play the drums and formed his first band in high school in Paducah, KY. At 17, he was hired by Harry Barry to play in his all-girl orchestra, which toured throughout New England for many years.

In 1942 Mitchell joined the Army Air Corps. His first duty station was Blytheville, where he was a member of the Corps band.

It was there he met his wife, Elizabeth “Bettye” Rodgers. Shortly after their marriage they relocated to Sebring, FL, and later Smyrna, TN, as he continued to perform with the military band.

Following his discharge in 1946, the couple moved to Chicago, where he went into the import business for the next three decades.

He continued to play part-time with such notables as Eddie Fisher, Steve Lawrence, Edie Gorme, Joey Bishop, Isaac Stern, Gregory Hines, Regis Philbin, Tony Bennett and Jack Jones.

Mitchell retired in 1988 and moved to Bella Vista where he became a member of the Bella Vista Big Band. He later became its leader, and 10 years after, formed his own group.

“He was the center of energy of his band,” said current manager and baritone saxophonist Ron Thurston on hearing of his death. Mitchell personally tapped Thurston to replace him when he moved east. “We played for him and around him.”

Alto sax player Bob Christensen said the band members were dedicated to their later leader.

On Oct. 21, as word spread of Mitchell’s death, it just so happened the band had a rehearsal. “The mood was somber, there were some guys with tears in their eyes” Thurston said. “We asked ourselves, ‘what do you think Jack would want us to do?’” To the musician, Thurston said the answer came back “play.”

Before he left Bella Vista for Tennessee, Mitchell wrote a letter authorizing Thurston and the band to continue to use his name. Therefore, the Jack Mitchell Big Band continues today. “Jack kept the band alive and now he’s keeping his legacy alive.” Thurston said.

Both men said Mitchell had two things about him that sometimes didn’t set right with everyone. He was somewhat of a task master and he performed a lot of free shows. Many of those free events involved charities such as Village House Adult Day Program and stops at schools in northwest Arkansas to bring the music to the children. “You never asked Jack when you were going to get paid,” said Christensen. “He decided when and what you got paid.” Mitchell’s stops at the schools were extremely important to him, the men said. It was his belief that if he introduced a child to music, it would have a positive impact on them for the rest of their lives. “He loved children,” Thurston said. In fact, the band members are talking about the possibility of creating a scholarship in Mitchell’s name to help students interested in learning to play an instrument. “Something like that would perpetuate his name,” Christensen said.

Susan Wizer joined Mitchell’s group 13 years ago. The classically-trained singer said she had an interest in the big band music and accepted a job offer from the band leader. “He took a chance on me and taught me a lot about jazz,” she said. Wizer said she has had two mentors in her life, and Mitchell was one of them. “He took time to share with me and I learned a lot about the style of music. He led me on a journey as a vocalist. “There’s nothing better than singing with a live band.” Wizer said Mitchell had an intrinsic ability to know what people wanted and he would always give it to them. “He was the most energetic and motivated man I have ever known,” she said. “He never stopped. He was a great musician and had a great sense of timing. She also said Mitchell was always looking out for others. “I was touched by his dedication to the music and the band. He loved to help people and loved to help kids.”

Sunday, Oct. 16 was a great day as we were blessed to share with two of our young women decisions they have made for Christ.

AMY INSKEEP

Amy grew up in Indianapolis, but moved to NWA and graduated from Bentonville High School in 2006. She was an Ozark Christian College graduate in May of last year with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & Counseling. Amy is currently working toward her Master of Science Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy and CommunityCounseling at JBU. She transferred her membership to the BVCC family on Oct. 16, 2011.

Her family - mom & dad (Brian & Krista Howard) and her two brothers and sister have been active at the Rogers Christian Church for years. Amy served as a CIT Counselor at Camp Joshua while in High School. She also has joined in on quite a few mission trips, which include inner city work in Dallas, Nashville, and Indianapolis.

Amy met David Conrad while at OCC and was looking for a place to serve and share her gifts. She is enjoying being a sponsor with the high school girls at BVCC. Amy is very goal-oriented and hopes to work in the marriage & family counseling field, help those through their sexual abuse recovery, and someday write a book.

Amy loves animals and is a dog trainer. She also does pet sitting in homes (or at her house) and is a Mary Kay Cosmetic Consultant. In between her homework, she also loves to shop, watch movies, and go to Starbucks.

TIMENI STRAUSS

After her first visit to BVCC at the Christmas Eve Service last year with friend Jackie Charles, Timeni felt God has been working in her life. She made her decision to accept Jesus as her Savior and be baptized on Wed. Oct. 19 by Vicki Pomykala. (Vicki was her little boy’s bus driver at school.)

The Strauss family had previously lived in Arkansas before moving to Illinois, but came back six years ago for a job opportunity and to be closer to family. Timeni was a stay-home-mom for 12 years, but just started a new job last week as a part-time certified Occupational Therapy Assistant at POST 0218 in Rogers. Her husband, Troy, is employed as a Project Coordinator for the Benchmark Group. They have two children. Kolten is in the 4th Grade and enjoys building with Legos, fishing and swimming. His sister, Kami, loves to play with Barbie dolls, singing, dancing and gymnastics. Both children attend Cooper Elementary. They are a very outdoor oriented family...enjoying BBQs, basketball, even playing board games outside.

Timeni is already getting connected at BVCC. She signed up at the Ministry Fair to serve on the communion prep team and hopes their family can help with Guest Services in the near future. Timeni has a heart for others and looks forward to meeting new families and women in the church.

“After Joplin, Volunteer Says He’s Seen a War Zone”. By Douglas Grant

Ralph Bartley has never served in the military, but he has seen what a war zone looks like. That’s how he described Joplin, Mo., as he arrived there within 12 hours of the May 22 tornado that killed nearly 170 people and destroyed more than 7,500 homes and businesses.

Bartley was one of several members of Bella Vista Christian Church who went to Joplin on Monday, May 23.

Bartley, 32, an employee of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, left work that Sunday night, stopped at home long enough to change his clothes and then headed north to Missouri. “I felt I had to go to help,” he said of his response to the disaster.

He grew up in Pittsburg, Kan., so he is no stranger to severe weather, including twisters.

A series of tornadoes swept across Kansas on Sunday, May 4, 2003, destroying buildings and killing residents in several towns, including Mulberry, just 10 miles from Pittsburg. “I remember all the people who came to help us,” he said.

Bartley has good memories of Joplin. “Living in Pittsburg, it was to place to go to a restaurant, out for the evening.”

He said both of his parents had been in St. John’s Hospital at one time or another. The building, while still standing after the tornado, was for all intents and purposes a total loss.

Bartley arrived in Joplin in the wee hours of the morning, May 23. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do, but he was ready for anything.

He and a team of other volunteers were sent out on foot to find storm victims and provide whatever assistance they could.

He remembered one house in particular, where a man was picking through the rubble. “We asked if we could help. The man’s response was, ‘How do I know you won’t steal my stuff?’” Bartley said. Bartley was prepared for that. After showing his Sheriff’s Office identification, he finally convinced the man they were indeed there to assist. “What really bothered me was he had children about the same age as mine. It could’ve been…,” Bartley said, his voice trailing off at the end.

Bartley said nobody spoke while they worked. When they were done, the man said he didn’t know how he could ever thank them.

Others from the church who traveled to Joplin in those first days after the disaster were Rebecca Pullen and her sister, Christina Almaraz, Leo van Oudheusden, Paul Mega and Bartley’s wife, Kim.

“We started immediately collecting supplies,” Pullen said of the first hours after hearing of the devastation. She recalled seeing an entire room of the church filled from wall to wall with boxes of relief supplies. “It was incredible; there was so much food, water, clothes, toys. I’d never seen anything like it before,” she said.

Pullen remembered arriving in Joplin and getting her first look at the destruction. “I was shocked; it was sad. It’s beyond description.”

Unlike Bartley, Pullen had never seen or experienced such havoc. After seeing it first hand, she was surprised more people were not killed. Pullen was there on Thurs., May 26. By that time, she said, the fear of what had occurred the previous Sunday was starting to turn to other emotions. “Four days into it, the people were glad to be alive; they were grateful to have each other.” A number of victims told her, “All of this stuff can be replaced.”

While so many had lost everything, there were still signs of strength just about everywhere, Bartley said. “There was a cross or an American flag on nearly every house, or what was left of it,” he noted.

Pullen recalled seeing people digging through sheds, or what used to be sheds, and wondering why. Then it hit her. “They were looking for anything they could salvage,” she said. Pullen also recalled what it was like walking through the neighborhoods. “There were so many smells beneath the piles of rubble. You didn’t know if it was an animal or rotting food,” she said. She tried to block out thoughts that it could have been a human being. She also remembers packing bags of water, gloves, dust masks and other items for the volunteers and taking them to Joplin. “It was so emotional for me,” she said. “I was the one who packed them, and then I handed them out.”

Bartley and Pullen said their time spent in Joplin was an emotional roller coaster. Both were impressed by the miracles that occurred in Joplin than by the devastation they saw. Bartley met one man who said that if his house - which had been shifted off its foundation by the tornado - had moved any other direction, he and his entire family would have likely perished.

Then there was the man who accepted Bartley’s help to clear out some of the things that could be saved. They would point to something and ask if the man wanted it. At one point, Bartley noticed a dresser lying off to the side. “How about that?” he asked the man. “No, that’s not mine; it’s my neighbor’s,” the man replied.

Pullen saw one house that had been lifted off its foundation and moved to the neighbor’s yard. In the bathroom, sitting on the shelf where it was when the tornado hit, was a can of shaving cream. It had barely moved.

Returning home after seeing all of that destruction affected each person in a different way.

Pullen said little was spoken on the drive back. "I remember looking in the back seat, and somebody would be asleep and another just staring out the window,” Bartley said.

When he first came home after that first trip, Bartley said his son thanked him, telling him, “You did a great job, Dad.” He also said his children were hugged a little tighter following his experience.

For Pullen, the trip and what she saw made her realize just how fragile life is, and what is really important.

“I’ve learned to simplify. I didn’t need all that stuff,” Bartley said, referring to the material things.

Pullen donated a lot of her “stuff” to the relief efforts in Joplin. Both said they will return to the city when they can, to do whatever they can. In fact, Pullen has decided to volunteer later this month to help ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” build seven houses. But first, she is traveling with some other church members on a mission trip to Cambodia.

“We love Joplin,” Pullen said.

For David Conrad, the EF-5 tornado that ravaged Joplin, MO., on May 22 was personal. His family lives in Seneca, MO., 18 miles south of Joplin. So was the IHOP restaurant where Conrad worked for 5 years. “Most of the employees (of the restaurant) are all right, but many of them lost their houses,” he said.

Conrad, associate pastor at Bella Vista Christian Church, has taken groups of volunteers from the congregation to the storm-damaged area to help wherever they can. “I was just broken for the people, “ he said of the first time he stepped foot in the middle of the storm area. “So many had little to be hopeful for, and now they had lost everything.”

Nearly five months later, Conrad said things are not getting any better. He estimates that as many as 5,000 to 6,000 jobs were lost with the damage to or destruction of local businesses. In addition, the storm flattened an estimated 7,500 homes, according to an Oct. 2 story from the Reuters news service.

Conrad guesses that as many as 60 percent of the occupants of those houses were renters, who have either left the area looking for homes or are still in temporary situations. And from what he is hearing, many of the owners of those rental units are not planning to rebuild. “But, they are selling those plots,” he said. “A church or another organization could buy them, build a house and then sell it at no profit (to a storm victim).” Conrad said he sees very little, if any, risk in that sort of plan because there are so many people looking for homes, and many of them have received insurance money for their losses.

The associate pastor has nothing but praise for the Bella Vista residents who responded immediately after the storm with donations of supplies and money. Within a few days of the disaster, two tractor-trailers were loaded and driven to distribution centers in Joplin. In addition, more than $10,000 in cash was collected.

Along with the residents—many of whom spent hours on end collecting donations at Allen’s Foods in the days following the tornado - were area churches, the Bella Vista Property Owners Association and the Bella Vista Business Association working hand-in-hand to pull it off.

“I believe that this community is bent on making a difference in this world,” Conrad wrote in memorandum to those who participated during that time. “There were thousands of people who sacrificed possessions, money and time.” “I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this community. I cannot tell you how thankful Joplin is for this community.”

While his letter was meant to give everybody a pat on the back for a job well done, it also was to remind them that this is not even close to over. To that end, he passed along information that ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” plans to be in Joplin Oct. 19 to work on several houses.

Only skilled volunteers - such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, roofers, dry wall technicians, etc. - are needed for this project, Conrad said.

That information was confirmed by Sheri Hawkins of 2 Balance, a public relations firm in Springfield, MO., that is doing publicity work for the show. Attempts to contact the network about the project were unsuccessful. The website, www.joinextreme.com/joplin states, “The Joplin build will be one of the largest in the history of the wildly popular program. Led by Southwest Missouri home builder Sam Clifton, president of Millstone Custom Homes, the October Joplin project will build seven homes in seven days.

“Thousands of people in Joplin and from across the country have contacted us to donate, volunteer and support this massive effort to help rebuild Joplin,” Clifton said on the web page. “We are so grateful to Pastor Brad Gray and the generous members of Calvary Baptist Church for their generous support so we can all get together and share in the excitement leading up to the actual build.”

Those interested in helping can register online at www.joplinextrememakeover.com or www.joinextreme.com/joplin. Conrad said not all who sign up are chosen; a lottery is used to select volunteers. Officials report more than 50 businesses have already committed to supporting the project. There also is a need for funds to help the families who will live in the seven homes. Hawkins said all the expenses for building the houses has been procured, but money is needed beyond that. People wanting to donate can do so by sending checks to HBA Charitable Foundation, care of 2 Balance, 1355 E. Bradford Parkway, Springfield, MO 65804. The foundation is a 501 ©3 charity, so donations are tax deductible, Hawkins said.

FYI: David Conrad and Katie Gibson were selected by lottery to volunteer in Joplin on one the last days of building during the Extreme Home Makerover Project.

ALSO, we rejoiced to have John and Rhonda Adams transfer their membership to the Bella Vista Christian family that same morning.

Arkansas can truly be called home for the Adams. John is a third generation family raised here and Rhonda moved to NWA when she was young. John was in the Army branch of the military for 15 years. While he was serving, Rhonda was also employed with the government. At the present, John is IT Director of Washington County. Rhonda is enjoying being a housewife and taking care of the home. They have three children and 11 grandchildren all living in Bentonville and Rogers.

The Adams are very musical and were very active in the Contemporary Praise Band at Peace Lutheran Church when Amy Talbert was the Director. John plays electric, acoustic and bass guitar. Rhonda also plays the bass. They enjoy gardening, hiking, boating, going to concerts, and time with family.

Church has been an important part of their lives, as John served on the church council and the music ministry. Rhonda has been on the Board of Finance, volunteered with the food pantry, organized the World Day of Prayer, helped in the church office, and taught in VBS. They both served on the greeting team in former churches.

Rhonda is very interested in working in a ministry to reach out and help young women who have struggled in areas of their lives, especially with substance abuse.

Thursday, September 1, 2011 the Richardson Family shared in the joy of watching Pastor Ron baptize Bobby and his son, Don. Following the service Bobby, Sue, Don & Nicole, with their children Renee and Reece, expressed their desire to join the BVCC family. Let’s all pray for this family and take some time to get better acquainted.

BOBBY & SUE RICHARDSON

Bobby and Sue felt a calling from the Lord before moving to Bella Vista. They sensed He was leading them to pack up after living in Irving Texas for 47 years and move closer to their son, Don and daughter-in-law Nicole, to help care for the grandchildren, Renee and Reece. Bobby was employed with Sun Oil (Kerr-Magee and Anadarko Oil) for 30 years. Sue was the Administrator of the Law Department at Union Pacific Railroad Company for 20 years. While in Texas they enjoyed their time at their Lake House, particularly fishing and boating.

Sue has a passion for volunteerism. She was the Volunteer Director at a homeless shelter in Irving, where she counseled clients on budgeting and other issues. Being a cancer survivor, Sue was a spokesperson for the Susan G. Koman Foundation, even going to Washington on their behalf. While living in Texas, she also put her “hat” in the political arena running for City Council. Sue thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

The Richardsons were active at the First United Methodist Church for 18 years. Sue was chairman of the Missions Board and coordinated fundraisers. She and a friend also developed a Sunday School class geared toward people struggling with addictions.

DON & NICOLE RICHARDSON

RENEE, REECE

A job opportunity eight years ago brought Don and Nicole to NWA from Dallas. Nicole transferred with Levi-Strauss when they launched into Wal-Mart. She is now the Sales Director over product development and sales at the Bentonville office with vendor LFUSA. Don was previously employed with Keller-Williams in Dallas, but has since moved over with Century 21 Real Estate in Rogers.

They have two children. Renee is a Kindergarten student at Cooper Elementary in Bella Vista. She enjoys art, music, singing, eating pizza, and caring for her pets. She is currently taking ballet and tap classes. Three-year-old Reece, attends Little Sprouts Learning Center and loves to run, exercise, and playing with his trains and cars. Reece loves to build using his imagination.

Family time is very important to the Richardson family. When Don and Nicole have some free time they love movies and working in the yard. They both are avid scuba divers and billiard players. Don and Nicole have played competitive in this sport for years, but Don, who has been a billiard player since he was 5, does more league play these days.

Nicole is a part of the BVCC “Ignite” Worship Team and the "Fusion" Singers. She also has a passion to work with teens and possibly take a mission trip in the future.

Hey Church

I’m really excited about "The Story". This is going to be such a neat deal. Think about it, we are getting the big picture of the Bible…God’s seamless story unfolding for us over the next 31 weeks. Let me give you some ideas on how you can get the most out of what we’re doing.

1) READ THE STORY

The Story is designed for you to read God’s Word simply as a book. As I’ve said, it’s not the THE BIBLE, but it is the Bible in story format.

You can easily read along with us a chapter a week. (about 12 pages) If you are not a reader, we have access to the audio version. You may purchase that at a discount for $30 through our office. That would be a great resource for listening in your car, while you exercise, or for the kids to listen to when they go to bed at night. It is very well done.

2) FAMILY STORY TIME

Because we’re creating our Wednesday night Children’s Ministry around THE STORY, you and your kids will be able to read and discuss together each week what’s in the chapter. Mealtimes or those little talks at bedtimes are great opportunities to reinforce THE STORY. By showing your children that this matters to you, it will make a deep impression on your heart and may in the long run create a much more open family culture when discussing things about God.

3) STORY LIFE GROUPS

Doing this journey through THE STORY with the group will offer opportunities for great discussion and group insight. Group dynamic is such an important resource in life transformation. Psychology has known this for years, but really it’s as old as the Book of Acts. We are committed to offer as many life groups as we need to serve people during this journey. Again, Sunday we’ll have Life Group sign ups, but I want you to know that if those groups are full we will open new ones. We want every worshipper at BVCC to be personally connected with others in order to grow.

4) WEEKEND WORSHIP

Each weekend I will be giving a talk based on our reading. Some will be more overview and some will pick out a particular detail. Being here on Sundays is the first step in getting and learning the story of God. If for some reason you are not able to make it, each of my talks are downloaded to the website. You can simply click on sermon archives to listen or download.

5) CAMPUS STORIES STUDIES

We know that Life Groups don’t work for everyone. So, beginning next Wednesday night, I’ll be leading table discussions of THE STORY in our Atrium. This will be an opportunity for people to experience a small group without necessarily jumping in. It will also be a place for new people who begin attending BVCC over the next 31 weeks to get in a group mid-stream. I’m really excited about this Wednesday night opportunity and believe that as the group grows there will be new small groups birthed out of our Wednesday night together.

6) KIDTOWN LIFE GROUPS

If you really want to learn THE STORY… teach it to kids. Kids absorb information like little sponges. As you prepare to teach them you will learn much more yourself and they will grasp a foundation of the Bible that they will have for their entire life. Even though we are a larger church these days we still never have enough people to support our KidTown Ministries.

7) TELL OTHERS

Everyone one of us knows someone who probably doesn’t understand the story of God in the Bible. Even if they have gone to church their entire life they may be biblically illiterate. Tell them what we are doing - that we are going to go through the whole Bible in 31 weeks - that you would like to have them come and be a part of our journey. Make it easy for them by offering to sit with them so they won’t feel uncomfortable and alone. You might even give them your copy of THE STORY so they can begin reading it. I imagine if you’d ask the Lord who you should speak to, He will guide your steps across the room.

The fact is we are all participants in God’s story, whether we know it or not. Ultimately that’s the goal of what we are doing, helping people see how they fit into the grand scheme of God’s plan and become complete in Christ. I can’t wait to see you Sunday morning,

The Jr. High Students and their sponsors made a quick "Get-A-Way" to Ozark Christian College for this annual weekend conference on Sept. 16-17. The teens were challenged to take a look at their relationship and commitment with Christ through worship, sessions, and fellowship.

It was another great Sunday as we witnessed the baptism of another one of our teens, Felicia Carrender. Felicia has been coming to BVCC for quite a few years with one of our other girls, Crystal Lowe. Let's pray for Felicia as she begins her daily walk with Christ.

FELICIA CARRENDER

An 11th grader at Bentonville High School, Felicia has been attending BVCC with Crystal Lowe and has been plugged into our youth group for quite a few years. Her parents are Robyn and Michael Lewis, and dad Charles Carrender. She also has one brother and three sisters. Felicia was baptized on August 28, 2011.

Felicia loves photography and is very creative in art. She is active in the school Art Club and is looking forward to joining the Future Farmers of America this year. As she looks toward graduation in a couple years, Felicia plans to attend college.

This summer she was part of the teen group that attended the CIY Conference in Tennessee. Felicia enjoys babysitting and feels that might be a ministry she would like to serve in when she gets older.
